Victorian architecture was popularized in the late 19th century, in large part to the rise in technology during the industrial revolution. Craftsman style architecture is somewhat of the antithesis to Victorian style. While Victorian architecture's popularity was bolstered by the ability to mass-produce materials during the industrial revolution, Craftsman style focuses more on handcrafted materials and embraces the human aspect of the design. While there is no doubt that each style produces beautiful architecture, Craftsman designs tend to look more natural than Victorian designs.

With an emphasis on natural elements, Craftsman plans often feature natural stone, exposed natural wood beams and rafters, and use earthtone color palletes. These types of home builds place emphasis on quality and durability, calling on the timeless American values of hard work and the do-it-yourself mentality without a reliance on overproduction from machinery or mass-production.

It can be argued that nothing is more American than the Farmhouse design. Characterized by rustic elements, such metal roofs and very large front porches, Farmhouse designs capture the heart of middle America in a way no other home style can. Modern Farmhouse designs create nostalgia by utilizing the signature rustic elements of a Farmhouse and blending them with contemporary design elements.

One of the differentiators between a Traditional Farmhouse and a Modern Farmhouse is the use of color in the design.
